Chinese director Meng Jinghui Assumes the Honorary Professor of the Department of Theatre Arts at University of California, Los Angeles
According to the official WeChat account of Meng Jinghui Drama Studio on January 10th, Meng Jinghui serves as a Regents’ Professor at the School of Theater, Film & Television at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he will lead the drama department’s winter quarter course in 2025.
UCLA is renowned for its teaching and research capabilities, having produced numerous excellent scholars and national leaders. The current professors include multiple Nobel Prize winners and members of the National Academy of Sciences.
The School of Theater, Film and Television at UCLA is one of the 12 colleges within UCLA and is an internationally top-ranked interdisciplinary professional center. Composed of both the drama department and the film/television digital media department, both departments are recognized as centers of higher education in the United States. The school is also known as one of the top three film schools in the United States, alongside the School of Film Arts at the University of Southern California and the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. The school’s drama, film, and television program has produced a batch of Oscar, Emmy, Golden Globe, and Tony award winners.
Public information shows that Meng Jinghui was born on March 11, 1964 in Beijing, China. He is a director, actor, and producer in mainland China, graduated from the director department of the Central Academy of Drama. In 1987, he starred in the absurdist drama “Rhino”, which was his first appearance on the stage of the Central Academy of Drama. In 1990, he directed his first play “Elevator Send-Off”. In 1992, he joined the Central Experimental Theatre Troupe. In 1994, he wrote and directed the experimental drama “I Love XXX”. In 1999, he directed the small theater drama “犀牛角的恋爱”.
In 2002, Meng Jinghui directed his first film “Flying Like Chicken Hair”, which was nominated for the Best Debut Award at the 3rd Chinese Film Media Award and the Golden Crocodile Award at the 55th Locarno International Film Festival. In 2006, he directed the play “Water Moon Mirror Flower”. In 2010, he directed the play “Softness”. In 2015, he directed China’s first immersive drama “The Mermaid by the Dead Water”. In 2019, he directed the play “Teahouse”, which was invited to perform in the core板块IN单元 of the 73rd Avignon戏剧节.
