Qiudahong, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and professor of Dalian University of Technology, passed away at the age of 95 years old.
On January 11th, the Dalian University of Technology issued a notice of death: Qiu Dahong, the 8th member of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, the 9th member of the Standing Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, the member of the 9th and 10th Central Committee of the Jiu San Society, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and a renowned expert in coastal and offshore engineering, passed away in Dalian at 10:02 on January 11th, 2025 due to illness. He was 95 years old.
According to public information, Qiu Dahong was born on April 6, 1930 in Shanghai City with his hometown in Huzhou City, Zhejiang Province. In July 1951, he graduated from the Department of Civil Engineering at Tsinghua University and responded to the call of the country to serve as a faculty member at Dalian Institute of Technology (now Dalian University of Technology). He has served as an assistant, lecturer, associate professor, professor, deputy director of the Water Resources Department’s Port and Harbour Engineering Research Office, director of the Civil Engineering Department’s Ocean Dynamics Research Office, chief engineer of the Civil Engineering Survey and Design Research Institute, and director of the State Key Laboratory of Coast and Ocean Engineering. He served as a member of the Subject Review Group of the State Council Degree Committee, a member of the Science and Technology Committee of the Ministry of Education, a member of the Subject Review Group of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, an executive council member of the China Ocean Society, and honorary director of the China Ocean Engineering Society. Qiu Dahong was elected as a member of the Technical Sciences Department of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (Academician) in 1991.
Qiu Dahong devoted his life to education, scientific research and engineering construction in the field of port, coast and offshore engineering. He hosted many national major projects such as designing Dalian Fishery Port, which is China’s first modern fishery port and Dalian New Port which is China’s first modern crude oil export port. He also hosted the establishment of a national key laboratory for coast and offshore engineering and participated in establishing China’s first seaport engineering profession. He compiled “Port and Port Structures”, which is the first textbook in China’s port engineering profession. He was awarded many honors such as the first prize of scientific and technological progress from the Ministry of Education, National Science Conference Award and National Excellent Design Gold Award. As a member of Jiu San Society, Qiu Dahong provided constructive advice for major projects in China and was awarded the honorary title of “Jiushian Model”.
Qiu Dahong dedicated his life to China’s marine industry. He was a pioneer in shallow water nonlinear wave theory research in China. He was one of the first scholars in China to study irregular wave issues and was recognized as an expert who first proposed and solved wave infiltration problems in China. He was a pioneer in modern port engineering construction in China and made outstanding contributions to technological innovation, talent training and major engineering construction in China’s port, coast and offshore engineering field.
